The Rub of Time: Bellow, Nabokov, Hitchens, Travolta, Trump: Essays and Reportage, 1986-2016 (2017) is Martin Amis’s twenty-fourth book, his eighth non-fiction work, and his fifth collection of previously published reviews and articles on literary, cultural and political topics. Its 356 pages in the first UK hardback edition contains 44 items in all, less than half the 99 pieces gathered in his third collection, The War Against Cliché (2001), but more than the 27 in his first collection, The Moronic Inferno (1986), the 33 in his second, Visiting Mrs Nabokov (1993), and the 14 (including two short stories) in his fourth, The Second Plane (2008).
