In Manhattan Medea the German playwright Dea Loher transforms the classical Medea story into a critique of global capitalism and an exploration of the extreme lengths to which refugees might be driven in order to escape their pasts. Manhattan Medea was written for the Steirischer Herbst avant-garde art festival in Graz, Austria, where it premiered under the direction of Ernst Binder in October 1999. Subsequently, the play was translated and performed in numerous countries including Germany (Stuttgart 2013), France (Paris 2009 and Marseille 2012), Greece (Athens 2013), and Canada (Quebec 2011).
