Judith Hermann wrote the nine stories in her literary debut, Sommerhaus, später, published in 1998, during two residencies for writers, first at the Alfred-Döblin-Haus in Wewelsfleth, Schleswig-Holstein, and also at a workshop of the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin. At the time of the publication of Hermann’s second book, Nichts als Gespenster [Nothing But Ghosts] (2003), the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung stated that sales of Sommerhaus, später had reached 250,000 copies, and that the book had been translated into seventeen languages (Minkmar und Weidermann, 2003).
