This novel addresses questions of faith and dogma, exploring the narrow-minded and judgmental nature of the Lutheran code, particularly on matters of sexual propriety.

The first section traces the friendship between Edward Kallem and Ole Tuft. Edward and his sister Josephine live with their father, who, since the loss of his wife, has often “lost control of himself dealing with Edward” (44), but the boy is “a shameful tease” (45), often causing complaints from the neighbours.
