Theodore Jorgenson comments that “the play deals with the problem of a refined sensitive personality placed in a responsible public office but too tender-skinned to endure the crude attacks incident to political life” (287).

Act 1 set in an elegantly furnished drawing-room in a first-class hotel. With purposeful haste, Paul Lange, Minister of State, is writing cards which are attached to bouquets, one of blue flowers, one yellow and one white (the colours of the Swedish flag). His valet Östlie assures that they will be duly delivered.
