Marianne Thornton, born into a large family of nine children, was the eldest daughter of a Southwark M.P. and banker who died in 1815, followed by his wife in 1816. One of Marianne's younger sisters was called Laura who married a Welsh clergyman, Charles Forster, by whom she had a son, Edward. Edward Forster married and in 1879 became father to a new baby, christened Edward Morgan but later known as the author E. M. Forster. Marianne Thornton (1956) is thus Forster's “domestic biography” (the book's sub-title) of his great-aunt, who died at the age of ninety and left to her great-nephew enough money, £8,000, for him to go to Italy, travel the world, and become a writer.
