Never intended by Forster for publication, Maurice: A Romance was written in 1913-14, after Howards End. A homosexual novel that is as much a story about self-development and personal growth as any of his others, it was only published in 1971, after Forster's death. Maurice Hall is born into a respectable middle-class Victorian family. He grows up in suburban London with his widowed mother and two sisters. The book deals with this period of Maurice's life quickly, beginning with a schoolmaster drawing sexual diagrams in the sand for Maurice and then erasing them before anyone else can see.
