In this social drama, Bjørnson returns to his theme about equality in marriage, explored in De Nygifte (The Newly Married Couple) (1865) and En Hanske (A Gauntlet) (1883), but treats it comically, caricaturing himself as the egotistical Professor Tygesen.

Act 1

The curtain opens on a dwelling that looks like a museum of ethnographical specimens. It is the home of Professor Tygesen and his wife, Karen, and also the aged Malla, Karen’s former foster-mother.
