After the crime novel El juego de Ripper [Ripper] (2014), which surprised her devout, long-time readers, Allende returned to a subject dealing with love (and the lack of it) with El amante japonés (2015). If in El plan infinito [The Infinite Plan] (1991) Allende had already explored an enduring love that persisted for decades well into old age, in El amante japonés love in old age is also the main focus.
