Cennino Cennini’s Il libro dell’arte [The Book of the Art] is today considered a primary reference for the study of art in medieval and early Renaissance Italy. It is widely read by students of art history and painting conservation as providing rare first-hand insights into the materials, methods and social position of Italian artists at the turn of the fifteenth century. It is also studied by scholars of Italian literature as an unusual example of the technical treatise genre, having been written by a practitioner with probably only a moderate education, and in Italian as opposed to Latin.
