Witold Gombrowicz (1904–1969) occupies a central place in Poland’s contemporary theatrical life, and is the country’s most widely produced playwright abroad. Alongside his novels, short stories, diary, and various memoirs, Gombrowicz was the author of four plays: Iwona, księżniczka Burgunda [Ivona, Princess of Burgundia] (first published in Poland in 1938); Ślub [The Marriage] (first published in a Spanish translation in Argentina in 1946); Operetka [Operetta] (first published in Polish in Paris in 1967); and Historia [History] (published posthumously in Polish in Paris in 1975).
