Pinskaia Shliakhta [The Pinsk Gentry] (1866) is one of the most famous plays by Vintsėnt Dunin-Martsinkevich (1808–1884), a classic of Belarusian literature who stood at the origins of the national literary language and professional dramatic arts. Pinskaia shliakhta was written in 1866, possibly during the writer’s incarceration for his family’s participation in Konstanty Kalinowski’s uprising of 1863. The play’s message reveals the author’s disenchantment with the role of the gentry and is a reaction to the failure of the uprising and consequent national humiliation.
