The history of the medieval translations of the Psalter into Polish can contribute more than just information about the development of this West Slavic language in its written form. It contributes to the study of the religious culture of lay persons and their literate behavior, in particular their use of the written word for prayer and meditation. At the same time, we are dealing here with a complex and difficult subject because the field of research on the earliest psalters in Polish is dispersed among many disciplines (e.g. linguistics, codicology, art history, and theology) that rarely communicate with each other and often disregard the work of specialists in other disciplines.
