Liturgy in Pre-Modern Scotland

The Breviarium aberdonense, or Aberdeen Breviary (ESTC S11709, STC 15791), was printed in a single run in 1509 and 1510 and fell completely out of use during the Scottish Reformation of the 1560s; however, its short history is one that illuminates the cultural and devotional atmosphere of early modern Scotland.

Like all breviaries, the Aberdeen compilation is a liturgical service book containing the Offices of Catholic Mass: hymns, responses, psalms, and collects for each day of the church year. It also contains the Proper of saints – a calendar of feasts and celebrations with daily reflections on the narratives and biographies of holy people.&…
