Incidente em Antares, Erico Verissimo’s satirical novel – also his last – was published by Editora Globo during the most repressive wave of Brazil’s 1964-85 military dictatorship. Like his contemporary, Jorge Amado, Verissimo was a best-selling author in his homeland, acclaimed for his sprawling seven-volume saga O Tempo e o Vento [Time and the Wind, 1949-1962], which traced the history of Rio Grande do Sul, a state in Southern Brazil, across three centuries. Incidente presents a different type of narrative, albeit with the same type of humanistic and political view that permeated Verissimo’s previous works: Saga (1940) depicted the tribulations of a revolutionary fighter during the Spanish Civil …
