The epitaph Fulke Greville wrote for his own funeral monument in St Mary’s Church, Warwick in 1628, places him within a context which has both ensured his endurance and yet entrapped his reputation. Born in 1554 to a prominent Warwickshire family with links to several noble families including the Dudleys, he was educated at Shrewsbury School and Jesus College, Cambridge. He entered the court of Elizabeth I in 1575 together with his childhood friend, Philip Sidney.
