Women on the Verge of HRT focuses on two forty-something-year-old women approaching menopause and mid-life crises. Vera and Anna are reeling from failed (or failing) marriages and fear that their desirability is fading with age. Vera expresses their anxieties when she wonders aloud: “How do you prepare for being on the sexual scrap heap? ...Do all us over-forties bring our sexy underwear and our face creams and throw them on a big bonfire?” (5). Rather than acquiescing and booking into a “sex hospice” (5), however, the two women embark on a weekend getaway to County Donegal to attend a concert by Daniel O’Donnell.
