Guzman, Go Home and Other Stories (1968) is the third short-story collection by Alan Sillitoe (1928-2010), following The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (1959) and The Ragman’s Daughter (1963). It contains seven stories whose topics include marriage and madness; transgression and punishment; the force of the past; the attempt to escape into a more fulfilling life; and the vulnerability of the child in the midst of warring parents. The volume shows Sillitoe’s ability to convey character, situation and setting concisely and vividly through narrative prose and dialogue; his capacity to generate rich simile and metaphor within the constraints of the short story; and his faculty for implying, within a …
