“Why I Write”
Considered by many critics and commentators to be a better essayist than novelist, Orwell wrote these two essays in 1946 subsequent to the successful publication of Animal Farm and prior to the completion of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Indeed, it may have been the commercial and artistic success of Animal Farm which gave Orwell, for the first time in his writing life, the financial security to indulge in an increased volume of essay-writing.
