Emily Lawless’s With Essex in Ireland was published in London in 1890, by Smith, Elder, & Co. It is an historical novel, based on the disastrous Irish campaign of Robert Devereux, second Earl of Essex, in 1599, and it is shaped by the playful subversions and ambiguities which characterise Lawless’s writing, particularly her novels set in Ireland. Its full title is With Essex in Ireland; being extracts from a journal kept in Ireland during the year 1599 by Mr Henry Harvey, sometime secretary to Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex.
