This collection of short stories principally comprises material Forster never published in his lifetime, but which, like his novel Maurice (1971) was left behind at King's College after his death in June 1970. The Life to Come and Other Stories (1972) contains all of Forster's extant finished stories that were not included in his two earlier volumes The Celestial Omnibus (1911) and The Eternal Moment (1928). The stories were written between 1903 and 1958, though Forster revised some of them as late as 1962.
