No Good Deeds (2006), Laura Lippman’s ninth Tess Monaghan mystery, adds substantially to the meta-narrative of Tess’s evolution from newspaperwoman to private detective. The story focuses intensely on her relationship with her younger boyfriend, “Crowe” Ransome, with whom she now shares a house in an affluent north Baltimore neighborhood. He works at her uncle’s bar and books bands for Baltimore venues, but she’s the breadwinner as her business thrives to the point that she can afford a used Lexus SUV and can turn down unsavory work, such as tailing cheating spouses “out of principle” – something she hasn’t in previous novels been able to do because of unpaid bills.
