Calderón de la Barca (1600-1681) is, alongside Lope de Vega (1562-1635), Spain’s most important classical playwright. In line with the European baroque in general, neither Golden Age playwrights nor audiences held originality, at least in the modern sense of the world, at a premium. A clear precedent to Calderón’s El médico de su honra is a homonymous play attributed to Lope which depicts the same basic scenario but contains fewer narrative and thematic strands.
