Black Grate Poems, Inky Parrot Press, Oxford, 1984, is a collection of fifteen poems by Anne Stevenson, illustrated with drawings by Annie Newnham. The thirty-two-page book is beautifully produced in an individually numbered and signed, limited edition of one hundred and sixty hardback copies in slipcases and two hundred copies paperbound. In a brief introduction Stevenson says that, in the summer of 1983, she and Michael Farley [her husband] “sold our large house in urban Sunderland and moved to a four-room terraced cottage in the pit village of Langley Park, County Durham”.
