Living in America was Anne Stevenson’s first collection of poems, published in 1965, when she was thirty-two. The volume contains thirty-three, short poems, none more than two pages long and most under a page, together with a brief introduction by the American poet, translator and anthologist, X. J. Kennedy. The poems were written during the previous dozen years or so, the first dating from her undergraduate days at The University of Michigan. Several were part of her submission for the Hopwood Poetry Prize at the university, for which she was given a Minor Award in 1952 and a Major Award in 1953, before graduating in 1954.
