The Life of Avvakum, written by himself (Zhitie protopopa Avvakuma im samim napisannoe i drugie ego sochineniia ) is a Russian literary work created in the 17^th century which is often referred to as the first Russian autobiography. Although various autobiographical elements could be found in other medieval Russian texts (e.g. Pouchenie Vladimira Monomakha - Grand Prince Vladimir Monomakh's Instruction to His Children, created in the 12th century), Avvakum was the first to give a full account of his life in the form of hagiography.
