Martin Amis’s arresting autobiography, Experience (2000), came out about three months before his fifty-first birthday. By then he had published nine novels, two volumes of short stories and three collections of essays. As a striking and provocative literary talent in his own right, whose father, Sir Kingsley Amis (1922-95), was also a famous author, Martin Amis had never lacked for publicity since the appearance of his first novel, The Rachel Papers (1974).
