With the main action taking place in the early 1970s, Nights Below Station Street is set in and around David Adams Richards’ fictionalized version of Newcastle, New Brunswick, near the mouth of the Miramichi River. The first novel in Richards’ second trilogy, completed by Evening Snow Will Bring Such Peace (1990) and For Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down (1993), Nights is primarily a study of characters and relationships, particularly within families, during a time of rapid cultural change. It won the 1988 Governor General’s Award for fiction.
