American novelist and short story writer Willa Cather (1873-1947) was visiting friends in Ville d’Avray, France, in May 1923 when she received a telegram from her New York publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, informing her that her 1922 novel, One of Ours, had been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. She was surprised as well as delighted at the news. In reporting the announcement, the New York Times noted that One of Ours had been deemed by the Pulitzer committee the American novel for 1922 that best represented “the wholesome atmosphere of American life, and the highest standard of American manners and manhood” (14 May 1923).
