The Lives of Animals represents a publication stemming from two lectures delivered by J.M. Coetzee for the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University made on 15 and 16 of October 1997. The text, published two years later in 1999 (the year of the first appearance of Coetzee’s most-read novel Disgrace), is composed of these lectures (complete with Coetzee’s footnotes) appended by four “reflections” put forward by four academics from four different fields. The broad span of disciplines covered by these contributors – Marjorie Garber, Peter Singer, Wendy Doniger, and Barbara Smuts – attests to the diverse applications of the questions raised in Coetzee’s lectures: in order listed these disciplines …
