Appearing simultaneously with Julia Barrett's Presumption, another sequel to Jane Austen's most popular novel Pride and Prejudice , Emma Tennant's Pemberley or Pride and Prejudice Continued (1993), takes Elizabeth Bennet into married life with Fitzwilliam Darcy. The novel explores an area of life untouched by Austen herself, whose loving couples are rarely able to rise above conventional dialogues having escaped the social constraints of dull, dangerous or hypocritical company.
