The novels Flughunde [The Karnau Tapes, 1995], Spione [Spies, 2000], and Kaltenburg (2008) established the national and international reputation for Marcel Beyer as a new, somewhat idiosyncratic voice in German literature. The recipient of several prestigious German literary awards, Beyer has been hailed by The New Yorker magazine as one of the best young novelists in the world.
