The only book written by Lady Hester Stanhope (Remarks upon Hermodactylus) was privately printed and published in 1933. It cannot really bear the name of “book” as it is rather (as alluded to in the title) a collection of remarks about a bulbous variety of crocuses.
What is noteworthy about it is its obvious destination, its fund of knowledge and the light it throws upon the author.
Firstly one needs to highlight the addressee, which could only have been Sir Joseph Banks with whom Lady Hester had long been in correspondence. She had repeatedly promised to send him a long essay about curiosities in her Eastern environment which might be of interest to him and his circle of scientist friends.
