This collection of short stories, including the eponymous novella, was first published in Paris in 1980, by the women’s press Des femmes, the only work of Djebar’s to be published by them. Its first English translation appeared in 1992. This entry covers the first edition, although a new edition which appeared in 2002 contained some small changes to the “Ouverture”, discussed below, and the addition of a new short story, “La nuit du récit de Fatima” (the night of Fatima’s story) (see Bourget 2008).
