In the many versions and languages in which it has been read and seen, The Adventures of Pinocchio is one of the best-known stories in the world. The literary text is often claimed to be second in readership only to the Bible. Much of this popularity is due to the enormous success of the 1940 Disney film and the illustrated children's book made from it. These and other treatments of the work, however, diverge in significant ways from the Italian original, which is thus often a revelation for modern readers.
