Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell was published by Aylott and Jones of London in May 1846. The expenses were met by Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë, but the volume sold very few (two, by all accounts) copies. Smith, Elder and Co. reissued the work in 1848, retaining the original date of publication on the title page. Nineteen of the poems in the collection were by Charlotte (Currer) Brontë, with twenty-one each by Emily (Ellis) Brontë and Anne (Acton) Brontë. Emily’s initial reluctance to publish her poems after Charlotte found her sister’s “MS. volume of verse” in the autumn of 1845 is documented in the “Biographical Notice of Ellis and Acton Bell”, which prefaced the 1850 edition of Wuthering Heights
