The Protestation Protested was written by Henry Burton, who was a leading London Minister as a result of his opposition to William Laud in the 1630s, in response to the “Protestation” ordered by the House of Commons in May 1641. This pamphlet should be seen in the context of the wider Independent – Presbyterian religious dispute that raged throughout England in the early 1640s. Although published anonymously, Burton was soon identified as the author, adding to his reputation as a leading advocate of the Independent or Congregational religious polity.
