Published by Henry Burton, a leading London Puritan Minister and fierce critic of the Caroline Church, as a companion piece to his For God, and the King in 1636, the Apology of an Appeale was an open letter to the public in an attempt to counter the furore and legal moves against him in the Court of High Commission and thereby garner support for himself and the ideas that he had openly espoused in For God, and the King. Burton looked to the King, the Nobility, who could advise the King against the influence of the Laudian Bishops, and finally to the Judges, who he hoped would be hearing his case in the Court of Star Chamber.
