In 1965 Janet Frame described the manuscript she had completed two years previously, Towards Another Summer, as “a novel-length autobiographical essay” (“Beginnings” 47). It would be another 42 years before Towards Another Summer would be published, several years after the author's death in January 2004, and so for almost half a century the book had little more advertisement than the potluck generic packaging Frame had consigned it to.

Now that Vintage Books have released it into the literary marketplace, adorned with beautiful cover artwork in hues of blue, Towards Another Summer invites a reading against the grain of its own manipulation by the industrial imperatives of publication. …
