Helisenne de Crenne's novel Les Angoysses douloureuses qui procedent d'amours is the most widely-read and studied of the author's works. It appeared in 1538 with the Parisian printer Denis Janot and signalled the start of a collaboration between the author and printer which would endure throughout the publication of her works. Janot, a printer and bookseller with a reputation for producing high-quality illustrated works for leisure reading was an obvious choice for a female author who wanted to expand her literary renown.
