Hubert de Vere is one of four tragedies written by Burney, only one of which (Edwy and Elgiva) has ever been staged, and none of which were published in her lifetime. She is believed to have begun writing Hubert de Vere, along with her other three tragedies, between 1790 and 1793, during her time as Second Keeper of the Robes at the court of George III and Queen Charlotte (Sabor, II, 93-4).
Sabor places the action of Hubert de Vere between 1200 and 1216 after the signing of the treaty between King John of England and King Philip of France, and the action centres around the eponymous hero’s wanderings around a very rural Isle of Wight and his relationship with Cerulia,…
