Martin Walser’s short novel Jenseits der Liebe [Beyond All Love, 1976] deserves recognition as an important text in the author’s literary development, because it links thematic elements from his early period with a more succinct style, typical of his successful creative phase beginning with the novella Ein fliehendes Pferd [Runaway Horse, 1978]. Walser’s text can be regarded as an effective attempt at presenting the effects of West German corporate reality on the individual psyche in a new, concise idiom reminiscent of the Kafkaesque style of his early short stories.
