The Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research was originally published as a non-fiction ecological study and was coauthored by Steinbeck with Edward F. Ricketts, a marine biologist and the author’s closest friend; it included a narrative portion by Steinbeck and a lengthy annotated phyletic catalog of marine animals from the Gulf of California prepared by Ricketts. This first version of the book also included 42 pages of plates, photographs and charts that the publisher, Viking Press, generously included to illustrate the expedition’s findings.
