Das Leben Jesu, krtisch bearbeitet [The Life of Jesus, Critically Examined], published in two volumes in June and October 1835 (although the title page of the second volume says 1836) is David Friedrich Strauss’ major work of almost 1500 pages and the one which made him (in)famous. Written since 1832, immediately after his university studies, this book is heavily influenced by Strauss’ academic teachers at Berlin, professors Friedrich Schleiermacher and E. W. Hengstenberg. At the time Strauss was enrolled, Schleiermacher gave lectures on the “historical Jesus”, i. e. Jesus the man, who lived in Palestine, taught there, was crucified, and whose message was passed on by his disciples. …
