Die Nacht von Lissabon [1962; The Night in Lisbon, 1961] was first published in English translation (transl. Ralph Manheim. New York: Harcourt, Brace) and one year later in German: In 1942 the first-person narrator, whose name is not mentioned, is staring at a ship anchored in the harbor of Lisbon, ready for departure to America on the following day. He is a refugee from Hitler Germany who wants to escape to America together with his wife Ruth, but he has neither a valid passport nor the required visa or the necessary money for the passage.
