Liebe deinen Nächsten [Flotsam; 1941] was first published in 1941 in English translation (transl. Denver Lindley. Boston: Little, Brown). The first German edition was published in the same year in Sweden by the exile publishing firm Bermann-Fischer which had taken over the publication of German exile authors previously published by Querido in Amsterdam. The novel was written in 1938-39 when Remarque first lived in Vienna, then Paris, and Porto Ronco, Switzerland, after which he immigrated to the United States in August 1939. It is Remarque's first novel about the precarious lives of refugees from the Nazis in Europe during the period from Hitler's coming to power to the beginning of World War II. In his next novel, <…
