Written between 1904 and 1905, Stephen Hero is the unfinished novel that Joyce subsequently rewrote and published as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, first serialized in The Egoist in 1914-15 and published in book form in 1916. Stephen Hero retains the same narrative, although Joyce performed drastic modifications both in terms of content and style. Being a preliminary version of A Portrait, Stephen Hero is thus a fundamental pre-text that sheds significant light on Joyce's development as a writer and on the evolution of his literary method.
