The history of writing of The Quiet Don [Tikhii Don] goes back to the autumn of 1925. The author intended to show the role of the Don Cossacks in the Revolution, especially in the march on Petrograd lead by General Lavr Kornilov in September 1917 against the Bolsheviks. In the process of working on his book, it occurred to Sholokhov that the average reader knew little about the Cossacks and would wonder why they sided with the counterrevolution. Thus, in November 1926 he embarked upon a new version of The Quiet Don which opened with the description of the Don Cossacks’ prerevolutionary life.
