Geroi nashego vremeni [A Hero of Our Time] is Lermontov's only novel and ranks as one of the great classics of Russian nineteenth-century literature. It is of unorthodox structure, consisting of five separate stories linked by a common hero, Grigorii Pechorin. Three of these stories Bela, The Fatalist and Taman, were published as separate entities in 1839 and 1840 in a contemporary Russian literary journal.
