Eduard Mörike published Maler Nolten: Novelle in zwei Theilen [Nolten the Painter. A Novella in Two Parts] in 1832, the year of Goethe’s death. Between 1850 and 1875, the aging poet worked sporadically on revising his early novel, but completed only an idealized recasting of the first of the original’s two parts. The two disparate parts were then published posthumously in 1877, edited by Mörike’s friend Julius Klaiber, under the title Maler Nolten: Roman in zwei Theilen [Nolten the Painter. A Novel in Two Parts].
